Healthy Kitchen Tools

Healthy kitchen tools and utensils are few but important. It will require an initial investment, however items may be acquired over time as your knowledge and understanding of plate-based eating as a lifestyle grows. You can also add these to your wishlist or gift list from family and friends. You can also build a wishlist on Amazon for these items.

Once you have added some of these items to you kitchen, you will begin to see that a few appliances, gadgets and utensils will make such a difference. Prep becomes easier, recipes are made faster, food storage is safer and much more efficient. The right kitchen setup, will also increase our desire to eat and prepare healthy meals at home.

Like the healthy pantry list, the following is a place to start as you organize your healthy kitchen tools to make healthier meals.


Healthy Kitchen Tools and Utensils


Pots and Pans

Nonstick skillets will reduce the amount of oil required for cooking. Stainless steel and/or cast iron also works well. You can purchase one or two at a time until you have he following:

1-quart sauce pan, 2-quart sauce pan, 5-quart sauce pan,

8-quart, 8-inch nonstick skillet, 10 inch skillet,

3-quart casserole dish,

glass baking dish (13x9x2),

loaf pans (two) 9x5x3 inches,

baking sheet 18x21x1 inch,

12-inch pizza pan

There are nonstick pans that are "green" or more environmentally friendly and less toxic.


Wok

Electric or stainless steel work. A nonstick wok requires less oil but cannot be used at high temperatures. 


Blender & Juicer

There are many types to choose from. We recommend using the following criteria when selection your blender or juicer:

  • Motor should be as powerful as you can afford
  • Should be easy to clean
  • Easy to assemble and disassemble

Crock pot

A crock pot or slow cooker is a must have for chef on the go. You can prepare your recipe and give it simmering time using the crock pot or prepare the recipe and let it cook all day. We have even attached an appliance timer to it in order to ensure safety in case of a late night at work or an unexpected circumstance.


Rice Cooker

Simplifies preparing  the perfect rice every time. We have also used the rice cooker to prepare other whole grains using the 2 to 1.


Knives

Good knives are essential and should include:

two paring knives, one cook's knife (6 inches long), one chef's knife (8 inches long), one serrated bread knife (8 inches long)


Cutting Board

Plastic, Glass or acrylic cutting boards are most sanitary and durable.


Utensils

Can opener, Colander, Garlic press, Grater (four sided), Measuring cups and spoons, Mixing bowl set (glass or stainless steel) Mixing spoons, Mortar and Pestle, Salad Spinner, Soup Ladle, Spatulas (one rubber and three wooden), Strainer, Tongs, Vegetable Peeler, Vegetable Streamer, Wire whisk, Wooden Spoons (three)
